If you had to pick your favorite pie, what would it be? I know, it’s a hard question! I happen to love lemon meringue pies, apple pies, french silk pies…I really can’t limit myself to just one. That’s why when Recipe4Living had its Best Pie Recipe Contest, it was hard to choose a winner. But one entry made our jobs a little easier. This Sweet Tart Apple Berry Apricot Pie let us know that we didn’t really have to limit ourselves. We could have all of these great flavors in one pie! Not to mention, look how beautiful it is!

If someone asked you what a cobbler was, what would you say? Would it differ much from a crisp? Or what about a crumble? Do you think there is a difference between these three desserts or do they all sort of blend in as some variation of butter, sugar and flour atop fresh fruit? Well, with fresh apples, pears, and pumpkins from autumn harvest on their way, I think it’s important that we can all properly label the desserts we will make out of this fine fruit. So here’s my guide on how to tell a crisp from a crumble and a cobbler from a crisp, with plenty of tasty recipes along the way (of course!)

I know I’m sneaking this in under the wire. The first day of fall is only weeks away and our warm summer temperatures are quickly escaping. This is not only upsetting because it means the dreaded Chicago winter is that much closer, but because it also means an end for locally grown, Midwest produce. It’s a very sad thing.

When my friend announced she was throwing a dinner party featuring ingredients from her local farmer’s market, I immediately volunteered to bring dessert. Not only do I love baking, but I had several pints of fresh blueberries in the fridge just begging to be baked. I could picture in my mind what I wanted to bake before I actually had the recipe. I thought I wanted to make some sort of tart that uses fresh blueberries and either a pastry cream or jam. Ideally, this would have been great until I actually thought about making pastry cream and a tart crust from scratch.
On to Plan B.

As I mentioned yesterday, R and I had a large number of people over last weekend. And although I was by no means calm and composed, I think I handled feeding and entertaining 50 people quite well, if I do say so myself. I love entertaining friends and family, and really don’t mind putting the work into making a beautiful spread. If it wasn’t so darn expensive, I’d do it a whole lot more often!

Well that was embarrassing.
I was just raving about my new favorite fruit to Maxine - Cara Cara Navels, also known as red navels a variety of orange. I went on and on about how surprisingly red they are for oranges, and how much sweeter and tastier they are than regular navel oranges. I just boasted about how they’re like miniature versions of grapefruits growing inside the skin of an orange.
