December Monthly Mouthful

As Maxine pointed out yesterday, the holidays are upon us. That means cookies and  brownies and cakes and pies and whatever it is that makes up our favorite holiday desserts. So I ask you, what better way to usher in the holiday spirit than sharing some of our favorite holiday desserts?  That’s why we asked the food bloggers of the world:

“What is your favorite holiday cookie or dessert? Please share your recipe!”

Holiday Baking Already?

Christmas music on the radio? Check! Black Friday craziness at department stores? Check! Lighted shrubbery all over the neighborhood? Check! Yep, it must be the holiday season. And for cookie-bakers around the world, it means it’s time to get down to business. Even though my family doesn’t celebrate Christmas, I can fully sympathize with the need to get lots of baking done in a very short period of time.

Fresh Baked Chocolate Chip Cookies

I stopped by a friend’s apartment the other day to see her new place. She gave me the tour: her bedroom, the living room, her roommate’s rooms, the bathrooms, and of course, the kitchen. Max and Benny’s, a local Northbrook deli, has sweetened up the election with cookie representations of both presidential tickets.

Jam Buttons from My Cookie Cookbook

For most college students, the ideal birthday present is either beer or money to buy beer. But me, I’ve always preferred cookies. In fact, many of my fond birthday memories center around cookies. My freshman year, my friend ordered the Cookie Guy - a genius service that delivers hot, freshly baked cookies to your door (or dorm room) with cold milk to wash it down. (Hillary has expressed similar love for the University of Illinois version.)

Watermelon Shaped Almond Shortbread Cookies

Tell me one thing: if you went to a picnic and saw these cookies on the dessert platter, would you not melt at how adorable they are? Well, I would.

Disguised as watermelons, these almond shortbread cookies have won my heart and might turn up at my next summertime barbecue. You can serve them by themselves or as decoration for a platter of refreshing watermelon.

Recipe after the jump!
