Secondhand Travels

When I can’t travel as much as I want, I live vicariously through friends. This was taken in China. Sugar coated fruit kabobs?!! Yes please!
But maybe I don’t have to go to China to indulge, maybe I could make them myself!
Vanilla and cinnamon add sweetness while ginger and red pepper bring a surprise heat to these grilled tropical fruit skewers. Make sure bananas are firm and ripe for this spicy, jazzed up, special dessert.
Ingredients
1/2 C. brown sugar
1/4 C. rum
2 tsp. McCormick® Pure Vanilla Extract
1/2 tsp. McCormick® Ground Cinnamon
1/2 tsp. McCormick® Ground Ginger
1/4 tsp. McCormick® Ground Red Pepper
1 large pineapple, peeled, cored, cut into 2×1-inch pieces
4 ripe red or 2 ripe yellow bananas, peeled, cut into 2×1-inch pieces
2 star fruit, cut into 1-inch slices
8-12 skewers
Directions
In a small bowl, stir first 6 ingredients until sugar dissolves. Set aside. Thread fruit alternately onto double skewers. Brush with spice mixture. Let stand 5 minutes. Grill or broil fruit skewers 10 minutes or until brown, basting with spice mixture and turning occasionally.

Hey Hillary, Those Kabobs look great and I sure could use one about now. Yum. Anna
Posted by Anna at April 7th, 2008, 7:58 pmWow this photo makes me so hungry (and brings back wonderful and delicious memories of China.) I never particularly liked eating these skewers– too much sweetness, but they were great to look at. And a very regular feature of the street scape. The crab apple sort of ones were my favorite though.
