___ on a Stick

Visiting the Renn Faire over the weekend (following Hillary’s footsteps), I noticed a theme to things beyond medieval outfits and terrible Elizabethan accents:

Sort of a…trend?

I don’t know, maybe it’s the hand-painted signs. What do you guys think?

Why are we, as a culture, so enamored with things on sticks? It’s not simply in fair food; look at the humble chicken drumstick (or, if you must, the gargantuan turkey legs available at the Renn Faire). Kids fight over it; KFC markets it; everyone loves it. I guess it all comes down to the pleasure and convenience of one-handed eating. I mean, if you only need one hand to chow down on your frozen banana, think of all the stuff you can do with that other hand: drive! Write! Hold more food!

Pratchett fanboy that I am, I kind of want to see more “___ inna bun” foods show up at fairs. Then again, given how Pratchett describes those foods, maybe I don’t.

  1. This makes me laugh because when I was younger, as an inside joke, my brothers and I used to add the words “on a stick! ” to just about everything. Not sure why it was soo funny, but it was.

Way to copy me on the Renn Faire! Kidding…

  2. About the only thing I like to eat on a stick is a fudgesickle, and frankly, they aren’t very good as they taste more like chocolate water rather than ice cream.

I even hate it in restaurants when they serve some kebab thing grilled on a stick and you can’t wrench the damn items off, particularly the meat, without using ever-increasing amounts of force. Eventually when the grilled item finally yields half the time it goes flying across the table. I think the kitchen people should take the meat off the damn stick for me! (Just one klutzes’ opinion).

  3. Haha, I just went to the Renn Fest in MD this past weekend. They do have absolutely everything on a stick! I did indulge in some cheesecake [on a stick, of course], but other than that eating things off sticks isn’t as easy/fun as it would seem. It’s not very practical, imo -_-.

  4. I went to a Renn Faire last weekend and you’re right, everything on a stick! I loved frozen bananas on a stick, covered in chocolate. Yum!

  5. This reminds me of the state fair here in Minnesota. I’ve had Cheesecake on a stick and you can even get Mac and Cheese on a stick. I love it!

  6. This reminds me of the recurring Daily Show joke, with Jimmy Dean pancake wrapped sausage on a stick. Haha

  7. They have pickles on a stick too. You can’t help but look a little perverse eating them.
